Frequently asked questions

Can I measure my own website?

Yes, though not on YeahNah. Free tools include Google’s PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest and the Website Carbon Calculator, or your own browser’s developer tools, which show every file a page downloads. Each measures one page, once, so its figure will differ from ours.

Will you add my website?

Maybe. We score the best-known organisations in each industry we cover, all chosen the same way. If we’ve missed one, or there’s an industry we should cover, tell us. We can’t add every website we’re sent, but we read every suggestion.

How heavy is a normal web page?

Half of the 34 New Zealand websites we scored in October 2026 use more than 1.8 MB a page. Worldwide, half of all homepages on phones weigh more than 2 MB (HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025).

Why is my grade different from Website Carbon’s?

Website Carbon tests one page, once, and estimates its carbon, allowing for green hosting. We measure five pages on a phone and a laptop, first visits and returning ones, and grade weight alone. So our grade can differ.

Why grade weight, not carbon?

We can measure weight exactly. Carbon has to be estimated from a model, so we show it as a guide.

Do websites pay to be scored?

No. Nobody pays to be scored, and nobody can pay to change a score.

When might we be wrong?

We make up to three visits on each device, from one place, at one speed. Some pages change between visits or keep downloading. Savings are estimates. Our method page says more.

Does a lighter website really cut carbon?

A little, page by page. A smaller website does not switch off a data centre. It does mean less work for every device that opens it.

How do I improve my grade?

Your profile lists the biggest savings. Make them, and next month’s grade shows the difference for anyone to see.
